Lost Cause Ranch
США
Добавлен 27 июн 2017
We LOVE Land Rovers, with 20+ in the collection and many builds in progress with an entertaining and non purist twist we are saving them in our own way.
The Lost Cause Ranch was coined by my brother years ago, he noted that anything that got moved to my property became a lost cause. Follow along as we change that tune and bring many of them back to life, saving them from the proverbial scrap yard in the sky. We have 10+ Discoveries in many states including one under the knife for an LS conversion. Several Defenders with a chassis up LS3 build. More LR3's and LR4's than we can count in and out.
There is enough Land Rover here to give you fresh content 2 times a week.

End of the Road for the V10 Touareg
Today we finally start paring down some of the things laying around the ranch, starting with our beloved Touareg. This guy has the rare and quite fun V10 twin turbo diesel engine. Yes, 10 cylinders, two turbos from the factory in a Touareg, quite the setup. Well at this point all I want is the v10 part, so we figure out a way to get the engine out without a lift. The last time we removed the engine we dropped it out the bottom the way you are supposed to. This time we have to get creative with our gantry crane to figure out a way to remove it.

Will My 30 Year Old Land Rover Make it to MOAB?
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.Месяц назад
Today we do some last minute repairs to my beloved ECO Challenge Land Rover Discovery to try and make the 1250 mile drive out to Moab Utah to take the old girl out to have some fun. At 218k miles and nearly 30 years old (and being a Land Rover) this may be a monumental task, but let's find out together if it can handle it. Stay tuned for the next video for some fun out in Moab. www.TheLostCause...
Starting Our Custom Aluminum Dash on the Land Rover Defender
Просмотров 2 тыс.2 месяца назад
Today we start the actual buildout with the custom Aluminum Dashboard for our LS3 swapped Land Rover Defender. It doesn't go exactly as planned but we still get further on our left hand drive conversion dash. We finally use the CNC Plasma for the project we acquired it for. Let me know what you guys think. Make sure to subscribe to keep up to date on this Defender build. www.TheLostCauseRanch.c...
I’m Finally Back! Our First Project With The $1000 CNC Plasma
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.2 месяца назад
Today we are finally back. It’s been an interesting month, felt under the weather for a couple weeks. Me being a whiny baby about that put everything behind for a few weeks. Also, I bought more stuff, like I needed to do that. Recently we found what I think was a great deal on a Langmuir Crossfire Pro CNC Plasma Table, it was listed on Facebook Marketplace for just $1500. But better than that w...
Will It Start? Something I've Never Messed With - Air-Cooled Engines

Today we get to a little project that has been laying in wait at the shop. My friend has a fun little VW project going and it came with this bare engine on a starter stand. So we dig into it since we have no history or idea what condition it is in. Reassemble it, and hopefully fire it up. We also get the budget LR4 back on the road with some basic maintenance. Get the Range Rover Camper out of ...
Shop Updates! (For My Broken Land Rovers)

Today we continue with our Spring season chores. We up productivity by mounting a distracting TV on the wall. We see if the CNC plasma table actually fits were it was designed to go. And on top of that, we have the 2 Land Rovers that I use for daily drivers broken. Typical Land Rover life haha. www.TheLostCauseRanch.com
Needs an ENGINE? BMW N20 Timing Chain Failure | Can We SAVE It?
Просмотров 5 тыс.4 месяца назад
Today we dive into another brand that can't seem to get timing chains right either. See it is not Just Land Rover with the LR4 and Ranger Rover 5.0 V8. This particular BMW was just diagnosed at the BMW dealer with needing an entire engine replacement. The BMW N20 and N26 4 cylinder engine found in the 320i/328i/X1/X3 is very prone to timing chain failures which in some cases can ruin the engine...
Can We Get our $1000 CNC Plasma Table To Work?
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.4 месяца назад
Today we work on sorting out our latest purchase for the shop. A new(to me) CNC Plasma Table! Recently we found what I think was a great deal on a Langmuir Crossfire Pro CNC Plasma Table, it was listed on Facebook Marketplace for just $1500. But better than that we we able to score it for $1000. It looked the part of a $1000 plasma table, so today we disassemble, clean, refinish and get this th...
My NEW Shop Finally LOOKS Finished (Plus a Broken LR4)
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.4 месяца назад
Today we finish up the insulation in the shop. The white radiant barrier with the exposed and painted trusses really hit off the look in my opinion, so happy to see it come together. We also got another project dropped off, just what I need. The LR4 breaks. And Ted and I make a trip for a fun new tool for the shop. Exciting days in this video for sure! Here is the link to the playlist of all th...
How I'm Saving $9500 Insulating My DIY Shop Build
Просмотров 3,3 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Today we are getting a big portion of the insulation done on my self built shop. We have done the majority of the work ourselves (everything but the concrete finishing). I originally intended on letting the pros do some spray foam insulation, but after some cost increases and the quotes I was getting back I just couldn't justify the expense. With the spray foam and by the time I paint the expos...
More LR4 Timing Chain Failures - The Complete Chain Replacement On The Free Land Rover
Просмотров 23 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Today the long awaited 5.0 V8 timing chain replacement on Merlin, the free LR4. Timing chain rattle, restricted performance and timing fault codes sidelined this Land Rover and nearly sent it to the scrap yard. Feel Free to skip around in the video (It's a long one I know, but wanted to keep the repair in one video to make it easier for anyone to reference in the future). The previous owner was...
Too Many Land Rovers! Not Enough Time | Organizing Before The Snow Hits

Today we work on getting everything sorted for winter. Per usual I have too much stuff laying around and we need to get that sorted before we bury everything in the snow. We also need to get up on the roof to get that watertight before getting the rest of the insulation up, just seems never ending around here but I love it! Oh and a sad day on the VW Karmann Ghia Link to LR4 Trip Video: ruclips...
We Assemble Our Rare Callaway Land Rover Engine

Today we finish up tearing down our rare 1 of 250 Callaway Land Rover 4.6 V8. This special V8 is destined for one of our Land Rovers here at the ranch. Can you guess which one? We do a quick clean up and re seal in preparation of swapping this V8 along with a r380 5 speed manual into a fun upcoming project. In the late 1990s Callaway produced a modified Range Rover. Callaway Land Rover? We Tear Down The ENGINE for a New Project!
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Today we pull the Callaway engine out of cold storage (well kind of). We get to tear it down and take a look inside to see what Callaway modified on this rare Range Rover Engine. In the late 1990s Callaway produced a modified Range Rover. Quite a rare piece as I believe there were only 250 of them made. A shade more power and some different touches throughout the vehicle made it a special P38. ...

What Do We Need To FIRE Up The LS3 Swapped Defender
Wow fantastic effort for a one man band and no two post lift, you really need to invest in a vehicle lift. Looking forward to seeing get the Manx back on the road, I’m sure Sasha will love the open top experience 🤣. Then is back onto the LS Defender? Keep up the great work. 😎👍
Welcome back! Did you do the ultra you were talking about? Totally jonesing that Manx!
Not yet, the one I’m training for is in October. But I’ll probably toss a 50 mile race in between then, I haven’t raced in an ultra since 2021 so it’d be nice to race in a “shorter” one beforehand. That Manx is so cool, wish it was mine haha. At least I’ll get to take it out every now and then if I want.
Did you have the speedo/mileometer recalibrated? If not your fuel mileage is way off!
I did not recalibrate the speedometer, but I did calculate in the tire diameter difference into the equation.
I have a 2013 LR4 with 182000 miles. How much to have you do a timing chain and fluid flush?
Do we know what years JLR updated the timing chain setup? I've seen March 2014 for Jags but dunno if thats accurate
Ah 2013, so Jaguar the following year I guess
That thing looks like a whole lotta nope to me lol. I mean it will be cool but too much junk on it for sure! Looks bigger than a big block too
Haha. It is a stout unit. Kind of sized like a late model hemi. Should be able to simplify a fair amount of it (hopefully).
Nice Fishing spider! I had a couple living in the raised bed garden last year. Didn't have that bad of a bug problem at that time. Glad to see I'm not the only one who uses ratchet straps for lifting/pulling applications. Assemble the kid's UFC ring, set up in local mall or outside of a nail/hair salon. Charge frustrated and tired parents $5 to"watch" their kids for 15 minutes. "Watch" said kids in pairs. Take bets from bystanders......
I have always wanted a V10 I have a 3.0tdi Q7 at the moment.
The V10 is quite the experience. But I’m all reality if I were to pick one between the two for a daily driver I would do a tuned v6.
Damn GOOOBER!!!!!
I don’t disagree
came to the channel for the Touareg, stayed when I fell in love with the LR stuff
Coming full circle. Appreciate that you are still around (and in the LR family).
Hoping for a v10 twin turbo diesel discovery
That would be something that is for sure.
put it in the manx LOL
Haha. Wheelie machine!
Put that drivetrain in a Defender!!!! 😁
That would be an interesting squeeze in there haha.
My favorite car of all time was my 2010 Toaureg TDI. Test drove a V10 that was older next to my 2010 first. Awesome cars. Pulled out a lot of Toyotas at the beach with it.
I really like the V6 TDI. That is probably a better all around engine to have especially on the daily and ease of parts/service. Plus the face lifted ones are a little nicer in my opinion. I bet yours did just fine pulling stuff around.
@LostCauseRanch It was just a Swiss army knife. Towed, good offroad, great MPG, comfortable, fast. People were amazed seeing it tow around a 27ft camper.
Oh man. You built that awesome building and didn't install a hoist???
I didn’t install a hoist.. yet haha. It will probably end up with a 4 post and a 2 post at some point.
Can't wait to see what your plans are for that engine !
HAHAHA now you need to build a storage building out back, Sasha just seems to ignore anything you do lol. And which rover you going to put that in 🙂
Yeah she is over my shit I think haha. I really need to sell more than I buy for the next couple months. But like I said, my problem is I like neat things.
I really hate to see an awesome vehicle trashed by someone that couldn't handle taking care of it
Hi, you didn't mention the engine in your LR3 was 2.7Td or 4.4V8 ?
I got a 2003 range Rover HSE and the engine is bad should I swap it for a LS3 ENGINE
The 2003 would be a little more challenging if you wanted to integrate it all into the factory Land Rover system being it is the later model BMW engined one.
Ugg! Sad to report that our 2013 BMW 328i xdrive N26 just did this after pulling away from a stop sign. After researching the problem, we discovered the year of our car is within a range where we should have changed the chain loooong ago. We have just over 190k mikes on the car. So, what could we expect to pay for someone to do the compression test?
That looks plenty clumsy to me
It’s not the end of the world to do but definitely more work than the drive overs.
Thanks for showing what this machine is capable of.
why is it called a NADA in the states and just a 109 sw in the rest of the world?
It stands for North America Dollar Area, so it was the models specifically configured and imported for the US and Canada.
Great job! A lot of work. I have to do mines on my 2011 Jaguar XF. Very informative video.
Appreciate that, hope it all helps!
aney updates on the engine?
What people who say, drop the engine to make the work easier, seem to always forget: If you drop the engine, there are so many bolts, connections and bushings you lay hands on, which are all possible failure points. You have to do an alignment as well and when you do an engine drop, you do every possible work which will come in the future, meaning from a few gaskets and an alternator you quickly get to a 2000-5000€ materialwise job which saves you a lot of trouble in the long run. So if you only want to replace the tandem pump or alternator, leave the engine in the car.
I agree with you. I pulled it later in when I built down pipes and did some other various services. As long as you have a 2 post lift most of the German stuff is simple to drop out the bottom as you are well aware I’m sure.
Bravo sir 👏🏼👏🏼
What website did you use to order the parts?
Hey Bud.Do you know how to get ahold of these guys?At alternative conversion?I can't get a hold of them
What did you mean with "Hood Ride"?
Is there any data on total incidence rate for these timing chain explodes? Out of total manufactured, how many total have failed due to these? What would be the percentage? 1%? 50%?
Question, What are the torque spec for the Spacers and wheel for your LR4? 96 lb/ft spacer, and 103 lb/ft wheels?
Nice work
I did the conversion as well. What did you end up doing with the rover throttle position sensor?
Always enjoy your videos mate. Currently tackling the exhaust on my own one if I wasn't sitting here watching your videos lol. Cheers.
What was total cost for that building. What’s the specs?
Just did this with the 2.25” on my 2013. Only removed the larger of the two mufflers. It’s not as aggressive sounding as yours, but I absolutely love the brrrr I get when I accelerate. Thanks for sharing and providing the links 😊
We took our LR4 on a cross country trip with the whole family last year. Six thousand miles in the dead of summer. It was a total champ. Not a single problem.
What are your thoughts on checking chain tension through oil filler and how tight should it be? Check warm or cold? Also, how many hours does it take to replace chains/guides/tensioners by an experienced shop?
just found your channel. Really great stuff... now to watch a dozen or so of your other videos to catch up on the build.
Thanks mate. I like the video. I’m looking for a V8 now.
No problem, I do love me a V8 LR4, hopefully you find the one you are looking for.
Thank you, I have one with 127k mikes in mint condition, some day I will perform this job!
Nice! Hopefully they just last for you and you don’t have to do them anytime soon.
An LS swapped Defender would do the trick! Looked like a great time!
I think so! It even has a new steering shaft. It was a great time either way, beautiful place.
Why the fuck are they doing this? I’m happy to pay more for shipping. I just wanted to be right.! this is some Third World garbage why is everything such trash now?
I'm about to do this but on their video on an LR3 they said the ligts need to be reprogramed. Maybe the LR4 is smarter
Now that looked like a blast, How bad did Ted rub it in lol, But the Eco did make it out there, and the steering shaft was unexpected. Sasha looked like she enjoyed it a lot too. And you can always try it again with the Eco. But either way it was an adventure
Always an adventure, it was a blast out there, not even the least bit upset that the Eco didn’t decide to steer. Sasha enjoyed the weather and the people around, she likes to be in on the action. Another trip out will have to happen.
Step 1) remove back of car. About to tackle this job myself, wish me luck and thanks for the video 🫡
Bummer day. My sister had gifted me the Disco 2. Ive been wrenching on it for a few years now. So 2 days ago i mentioned that the Disco was having brake issues. Specifically the rear sets. When i do testing for panic stops. Only the fronts brake. Then they become very hard. I have gone through the entire brake system rebuild. From the master cylinders to the brake pads and rotors and all brake calipers replacement. Its was not a huge money items. After i sent the cores back. I believe i invested $175.00 total. Then DOT 4 fluid. I flushed the entire system and then power bleed. I did find bubbles in the front. The final hurdle i ordered new brake lines. Stainless steel covered lines all 4 corners. Then power bleed again. I did solve a problem. The 3 stooges would randomly chime away. I would cycle the ignition and they would go away. After manual bleeding and power bleeding. The 3 stooges are not coming up anymore?? Im a DYier mechanic for over 50 yrs now. I do enjoy it very much.
